After the change of power in the country in 1977, Pranab was appointed by the “Janata Sarkar” Shah Commission. In 1979, Pranab became the Deputy Leader of the Indian National Congress in the Rajya Sabha. In 1980, he was the main leader of the Rajya Sabha of the National Congress.
From 1982 to 1984, Pranab became the Finance Minister after holding several cabinet posts. During his tenure, India paid the last installment of India’s first IMF loan. The then Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee signed Manmohan’s letter of appointment as the Governor of the Reserve Bank.

Pranab was cornered after the death of Indira Gandhi. Despite having a lot of experience from Pranab Rajiv Gandhi, Indira’s son took charge. He was removed from the cabinet during the Rajiv period and was sent to run the West Bengal Provincial Congress.

Pranab founded his own party in 1986. Named the State Socialist Congress. Three years later, in 1989, with the mediation of Rajiv Gandhi, the two Congresses reunited. Pranab is a homecoming. Pranab was the General Secretary of the All India National Congress from 1998 to 1999 when Sonia Gandhi was the President of the Congress. In 2000, Pranab Mukherjee became the President of the West Bengal Congress again. Then he held this post for 10 consecutive years. Pranab won from Jangipur Lok Sabha and became the leader of Lok Sabha in 2004. He won again from that center in 2009. In 2004, it was rumored that Pranab would be the next Prime Minister, but Sonia Gandhi became the Prime Minister from the Pranab has managed several important departments during the Manmohan Singh era. He was the Minister of Defense, Finance, and Foreign Affairs. Pranab left active politics in 2012 and became President on July 25. His term ended on July 25, 2017, and his new president was Ram Nath Kobind.
